Recording Demo as avi doesn't work? File gone where?

Postby nocomputers on Tue Jan 26, 2010 4:08 am

I want to use source recorder (demoui) to use some demos I took to make avi files.

These are the commands I am using:

sv_cheats 1
cl_drawhud 0
host_framerate 60

then I go to my demo, get to the spot I want to record, then I pause it

I type
startmovie [movienamehere] avi
I choose uncompressed (editing in vegas after)

it records, records, when i get to the point I want it to stop, I type endmovie

but there doesn't seem to be an avi file created anywhere...

anyone know what's goin on here?

I don't want to have to use fraps, but I will if forced.

I'm not sure that you can make avi movies directly. What is output are a bunch of TGA image files and a sound recording of your video. You have to stitch up all of that yourself.

shoot.

exporting avi works on tf2, but maybe it's only for orange box.

I HATE working with tgas and wavs, I hates stitching up.
but I guess it's necessary.

another question I had:
when I'm watching a demo, I use:
sv_cheats 1
thirdperson

but nothing happens - it doesn't go third person

is this a NT bug?

Export to AVI does work in NT, it's how I made this video.

The tricky part (besides framerates, which I see you've done) is that blasted 'Choose a codec' window. The only thing that really works for me is [ur=http://www.xvid.org/]Xvid[/url]. The other choices tend to make movies which are busted, take too long, or have no sound, etc.

One thing I recommend is--if possible--do "playdemo" only after you're already recording a video, and then use demoui or demoui2 to get to the spot you want and dismiss the GUI. It's easier to use video tools to cut out that extra stuff than it is to get Source to precisely do the span of time you want. (Also, avoid using the console while recording. Weird stuff can happen.)

Ah. That makes sense, that's why I saw the red warning error "Warning, Xvid only work" or something in console when I kept choosing uncompressed.

Is xvid good quality? I like high quality.

Uhm... Ye... N... yes?

It's got some controls in a window that comes up when I do recording, so I presume there are ways to tweak it. It seems to be plenty for youtubery purposes, and you can always use something like VLC to transcode it if necessary.

alright, I tried xvid and the same issue came - it recorded fine, but when I check my neotokyo folder, there is no avi file.
