Microphone Woes

Postby KamiKaze on Fri Jul 10, 2009 6:09 pm

Okay. This'll be longwinded, maybe.

When I start up Neotokyo, my microphone seems to stop working. As in, it's still detected but it can't pick up any noise at all. As annoying as this was, it got a little weirder. When this happened, I went and tested it via windows, it seemed fine. Tested it via steam, it seemed fine. Tested it via Neotokyo again, stopped work. Went back and tested it via Steam, still not working. Tested via Windows again, hey presto it works again and on Steam again.

Starting Neotokyo seems to bork the thing. Doing a windows test of it magically fixes it as long as I don't go back into Neotokyo. The heck?

Unfortunately, all I have is 'SigmaTel Audio', so I don't really have options. Alas.

maybe try updating your default audio drivers and see if you have anymore options?

I've had a similar issue.

My microphone doesn't work in NT, under Options/Voice/Test it does nothing...

But

In Steam and the Overlay it works fine. i.e. I play windowed and can goto Steam or the Overlay and have it work fine, also with Ventrillo, but NT just doesn't show it doing anything at all.

This is probably tied to the fact that there's no way to select an input within the game. The game may default to something bogus that doesn't have anything attached to it.

I have another issue, whereby my Webcam's built in microphone has higher priority than my actual mic. I always have to unplug my webcam before I play in order to use my real mic. A bit irritating, though less so than your issue, to be sure.

Its the fact that it works in the overlay that is so confusing.

It's because Steam operates outside of the game, and actually has a selectable input. But yeah, that is irritating.

Anything I can do? Or hope that the next version of NT fixes it somehow?

If you are running vista like I unfortunately am on one of my computers with NT on it, you can disable the alternative devices for recording like I did and it will force the game to recognize the only one left (the one you want it to recognize) as your mic.
I did that and it's been working great ever since.
